Resistant Oppositional Defiant Disorder
My name is James Keim, MSW, LCSW, and I am a specialist in Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). My focus is on children and adolescents for whom normal rules and consequences do not work.
ODD that resists normal parenting (Resistant ODD) is quite challenging. Families find that the very same techniques that have worked well for their other children, that are the standard approaches recommended in many books, seem to make the situation worse. To make matters more complicated, others may blame parents and assume that they are somehow incompetent. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Resistant ODD sometimes appears with children who have Attention Deficit Disorder, temperament differences, or anxiety issues. It is not understood why some children develop it and others do not. It is clear that treating it requires very different parenting and classroom management techniques.
I am currently working on a second book, this one exclusively focused on Resistant ODD, and wanted to share resources with the public. My book also addresses the issue of Justic Injury, a term that describes a child's or adolescent's vivid sense that they are the victim of profoundly unjust treatment (which is often a mystery to parents and teachers).
